I loved her immensely, but I still felt a surge of resentment at the joy with which Diane addressed the brat. I sighed, as I considered that she was a lot closer to her family than I was with anyone in mine. I’d been largely independent and self-reliant since I was a young boy. Growing up in a largish family taught me that you had to put yourself forward if you were going to get anywhere. It certainly didn’t teach me to love my brothers and sisters.
A flash of anger went through me as I heard Greg say how much he had been looking forward to this trip.
Yeah, and I stopped looking forward to the trip as soon as I found out you were going. Why couldn’t you have broken a leg, or something, during the week?
